I loved my former career in the emergency services, but the shift work and unpredictable nature of emergency response can take its toll on your health.
I didn’t link my health symptoms with this lifestyle until I studied nutrition science, and the penny dropped! The type of fuel you put into your body and its performance are so intertwined, yet I’d been living off a lot of convenience food and takeaways, and eating at all times of the day and night without a second thought. We all expected to keep performing at a high level on substandard fuel. But that only works for so long.
I now understand what different foods do to your body and how to make good choices for better energy, gut health and mood. But I also understand how hard it is to plan and prepare healthy meals every day, as well as resist the temptation of reaching for comfort foods to help get through difficult situations.
